Probioticsandprebiotics,aloneortogether(synbiotics),caninfluencetheintestinalmicrobiotaandmodulatetheimmuneresponse.Theymaythereforebetoolsthatcanpreventoralleviatecertainpathologiesinvolvingthegutimmunesystem,suchasallergiesforwhichnotreatmentisyetavailable.Thisreviewfocusesfirstonthedefinitionsofprobiotics,prebiotics,andsynbioticsandkeycellsinthegutimmunesystem.Itthendiscussestheireffectsonmucosalimmunestimulation.Experimentalfindingssuggestthatdifferentprobioticspecieshavesimilareffectsoninnateimmunitybyimprovingthemechanismsofpathogendestruction.Onthecontrary,theirimpactsseemtobevariableontheadaptiveimmunesystem.Prebioticscanalsoexertaninfluenceonthegutimmunesystemviathestimulationoftheautochthonousbacteriametabolism.Finally,thisreviewfocusesontheeffectsoffoodsupplementsonallergy.Differentstudiesperformedinhumansorrodentshavesupportedapotentialroleforselectedprobioticsandprebioticsinreducingsomeallergicparameters.Probioticeffectsonallergytreatmentareunclear,especiallyinhumanstudies.However,theyarepotentiallyeffectiveatshort‐termforpreventionwhentheyareadministeredinperinatalconditions.Aclinicalstudyperformedwithaninfantcohortrevealedabeneficialeffectofprebioticsinpreventingallergicmanifestationsatlong‐term.Furtherstudiesarenonethelessessentialtoconfirmthesefindings.Foodsupplementsofferpotentialtoolsforthepreventionortreatmentofallergy,butinsufficientevidenceisavailableatpresenttorecommendtheiruseinclinicalpractice...
