Inflammationcandirectlyandindirectlymodulatethebacterialcompositionofthemicrobiome.Althoughstudiesofinflammationprimarilyfocusonitsfunctiontonegativelyselectagainstpotentialpathogens,somebacterialspecieshavetheabilitytoexploitinflammatorybyproductsfortheirbenefit.Inflammatorycellsreleasereactivenitrogenspeciesasantimicrobialeffectorsagainstinfection,butsomefacultativeanaerobescanalsoutilizetheincreaseinextracellularnitrateintheirenvironmentforanaerobicrespirationandgrowth.Thisphenomenonhasbeenstudiedinthegastrointestinaltract,wherebloomsoffacultativeanaerobicGammaproteobacteria,primarilyEscherichiacoli,oftenoccurduringcolonicinflammation.Incysticfibrosis,Pseudomonasaeruginosa,anotherGammaproteobacteriafacultativeanaerobe,canreducenitrogenforanaerobicrespirationanditbloomsintheairwaysofthechronicallyinflamedcysticfibrosislung.Thisreviewfocusesontheevidencethatinflammationcanprovideterminalelectronacceptorsforanaerobicrespirationandcansupportbloomsoffacultativeanaerobes,suchasE.coliandP.aeruginosaindistinct,butsimilar,environmentsoftheinflamedgastrointestinalandrespiratorytracts...
