【 摘 要 】

The article is about a large commercial property built in Oslo in 1897 on one of the city's most central corners, directly opposite the University. We follow the building over a century, using it as a barometer to gauge the changing opinion trends with respect to views on architecture and cultural heritage, what type of buildings go well together and what at any given time is considered good taste among professionals such as architects and art historians. The debate started even before the construction work had finished. To some, the building was a chic and modern international commercial property, while others felt it was a sign of vulgarity, commercialism and lack of planning. The latter view was to dominate until the 1960s. It is the author's opinion that at that point, the building had become old enough for it to arouse nostalgia, thus contributing to making it harmless. The building was no longer a threat. A new menace was entering the scene: the high-rise buildings that were being planned for the same area.
