【 摘 要 】
The German occupation of Norway 1940–1945 created an urgent need for the Church of Norway to reflect on the relationship between state and church and on important questions within political ethics, especially the issue of obedience towards the state. In the Norwegian “church struggle” during the war, arguments from Martin Luther took a central role when the church claimed the freedom of the church and its right and duty to criticize state violations of fundamental ethical norms. Eivind Berggrav, the leading bishop of the church, played an important part in this, particularly in his efforts to present Luther’s theology and ethics, and especially his understanding of the two “kingdoms” (or “regiments”). The article presents Berggrav’s interpretation of Luther as an inspiration for the church’s struggle against the Nazi government. In this, Berggrav was influenced by contemporary Swedish research on Luther, leading to a critical attitude against a dualist understanding of the relationship between the church and the world. The article analyzes how Luther’s theology inspired the church to establish a critical perspective towards the Nazi regime.
