【 摘 要 】
In this paper, we propose a new dynamic bandwidthallocation (DBA) algorithm for multimedia services overEthernet PONs (passive optical networks). The proposedalgorithm is composed of a low-level scheduler in theoptical network unit (ONU) and a high-level scheduler inthe optical line terminal (OLT). The hierarchical DBAalgorithm can provide expansibility and efficient resourceallocation in an Ethernet PON system in which the packetscheduler is separated from the queues. In the proposedDBA algorithm, the OLT allocates bandwidth to theONUs in proportion to the weight associated with theirclass and queue length, while the ONU preferentiallyallocates its bandwidth to queues with a static priorityorder. The proposed algorithm provides an efficientresource utilization by reducing the unused remainingbandwidth caused by the variable length of the packets.We also define the service classes and present controlmessage formats conforming to the multi-point controlprotocol (MPCP) over an Ethernet PON. In order toevaluate the performance, we designed an Ethernet PONsystem on the basis of IEEE 802.3ah “Ethernet in the firstmile” (EFM) using OPNET and carried out simulations. The results are analyzed in terms of the channel utilization,queuing delay, and ratio of the unused remainingbandwidth.
