【 摘 要 】

IT has improved our lives dramatically over the past couple of decades. We use e-mail, instant messaging, or the Internet all day long, even on vacation. With the advance of IT, a knowledge-based society is emerging. Software and content technologies are at the core in developing this IT-based society we are pursuing. Software has a special role because it is the technology that is used to implement the new forms of knowledge. A profound understanding of software and content technologies is a critical factor for the success of this new society. Software and content technologies are also a major source of industrial competition around the world. This special edition of ETRI Journal deals with the main issues of software and content research in hopes of making a significant contri-bution to thedevelopment of software and contents technology. Among the broad research topics of software, studies regarding speech and language information processing, data mining, multimedia processing, software platforms, sensor network, embedded software, and information security are included in this issue. In the case of content research, studies related to computer games, computer graphics, virtual reality, and DRM are included.In response to the call for contributions, a total of 132 papers on a variety of topics were submitted from academic institutions, research institutions, and industry. After being carefully reviewed by renowned experts in each field and the editorial board, a total of 19 papers were accepted.I would like to thank all the authors who submitted their papers. I also thank the editorial board and the reviewers who evaluated the quality of the papers and returned invaluable comments. I am especially grateful to the Editor-in-Chief, Kyu-Seok Lee, the editors, and the staff members of ETRI Journal’s Editorial Office for their dedication in the publication of this special issue.
