【 摘 要 】

Pinanga limosa also known as Pinang Puteri in Malaysia, is one of the untapped medicinal herbs not only in Malaysia but all over the globe. Members of the family Arecaceae are traditionally use for the treatment of cancer. However no research has reported the cytotoxicity of this plant. P. limosa plant (whole plant) was evaluated for its cytotoxic effects on MCF-7 (hormone-dependent breast cancer), the cell line was assessed by using MTT assay, cell cycle arrest, and apoptosis was evaluated using flow cytometry analysis. The extract of P. limosa was found to induce cytotoxicity against MCF-7 with IC50 values of 18.00μg/ml, 4.80μg/mL. The extract has shown a significant cytotoxic effect when compared with a chemotherapeutic anticancer drug Doxorubicin (DOX). Cell cycle analysis showed that P. limosa induced apoptosis at various stages in cell line and a significant reduction in viable cells was observed. Apoptosis was observed as early as 24 hours and significantly increased after 48 and 72 hours of treatment. These findings suggest that P. limosa extract has the potential anticancer agent. Advance studies need to be carried out to verify the efficacy of this extract in Vivo. Hence this is the first study to carry out on this particular plant.
