Virtual organization is a recent way of work and workflow organization betweenorganizations or between departments within an organization. The principles, the toolsand the type of organization, could be applied to library organization as well as tolibraries’ cooperation and coordination. This paper examines first the similarities and the differences between VO and LISorganization, attempting to identify possible common organization elements. The paper suggests that the fields in which VO in libraries could be applied areorganizational synergies between libraries, consortia, scholarly communication,benchmarking etc.Consequently, the new roles and the necessary skills of librarians, and, accordingly,the demands for changes and adaptation in their education or continuing educationcurricula are highlighted.
