Two experiments examined how categories derived fromexperience and those derived from perception affect spatialmemory.Four kinds of objects were distributed within a circleand spatially clustered so that all objects of each kind appearedwithin the same spatial region. These identitybased categorieswere either aligned with or in opposition to the perceptually based quadrant categories that are imposed on the circle bydefault. When remembering only one object location at a time, participants used only the default categories and not theidentitybased categories to reconstruct memories.Whenremembering four objects simultaneously, participantscombined inductive experience with the default categorystructure to organize space.
