【 摘 要 】
Studying how humans interact with abstract, visualrepresentations of massive amounts of data providesknowledge about how cognition works in visualanalytics. This knowledge provides guidelines forcognitive-aware design and evaluation of visualanalytic tools. Different methods have been used tocapture and conceptualize these processes includingprotocol analysis, experiments, cognitive task analysis, and field studies. In this article, we introduce PairAnalytics: a method for capturing reasoning processesin visual analytics. We claim that Pair Analytics offerstwo advantages with respect to other methods: (1) amore natural way of making explicit and capturingreasoning processes and (2) an approach to capturesocial and cognitive processes used to conductcollaborative analysis in real-life settings. We supportand illustrate these claims with a pilot study of threephenomena in collaborative visual analytics:coordination of attention, cognitive workload, and navigation of analysis.
